Today the study of American religion continues to move away from an older, European American, male, middle-class, northeastern, Protestant narrative religion and american culture a reader and toward a multicultural tale of Native Americans, African Americans, Catholics, Jews, religion and american culture a reader and other groups. Most current textbooks remain wed to the older Protestant narrative. This reader exposes students to a broad overview of the work emerging from this rapidly changing field. The second edition adheres to the useful structure of a loose chronology combined with recurrent themes, but the content has been adjusted to reflect important scholarship that has appeared since the first edition. This edition includes ten new articles; some further address the areas of gender, Native American religion, religion and american culture a reader and African American religion, while others consider new immigrants, popular culture, religion and american culture a reader and the sociology of religion. While retaining the strengths of the first edition, this new edition offers a fresh look at the diverse work being done in the field of American religious history.
